VA Vinyl Acetate Content Affects Applications


●EVA resin with VA content below 5% can be used as LDPE modifier;

●5%-10% content can be used for injection molding foam products;

●When the VA content is close to 40%, the EVA material can be used to produce adhesives.


Compared with polyethylene, EVA is widely used in foam shoes due to the introduction of vinyl acetate monomer into the molecular chain, reducing high crystallinity and improving flexibility, impact resistance, filler compatibility, and heat-sealing performance. Materials, functional shed film, packaging film, hot melt adhesive, wire and cable, toys, etc. Generally speaking, the performance of EVA resin mainly depends on the content of vinyl acetate on the molecular chain.

EVA belongs to the advanced polymer material industry - high-performance resin - high-performance polyolefin plastic. Because of its high transparency and high adhesion, it is suitable for various interfaces such as glass and metal; and its good resistance to environmental pressure makes it resistant to high temperature, low temperature, ultraviolet light and moisture.

In 2018, the global consumption of EVA resin was only about 3.654 million tons, and the consumption in Northeast Asia, North America, Western Europe and Southeast Asia accounted for 2.981 million tons, accounting for 81.6% of the total global consumption that year.



China's EVA Imports Remain High and the EVA Industry Is Expected to Continue to Boom in the Next Few Years


The massive demand in Northeast Asia will affect the distribution of global production capacity. In the future, to reduce transportation costs and supply time costs, giant companies will make their production bases tend to be closer to demand areas. China's industrial upgrading, the vigorous development of the photovoltaic industry, and the western national strategy of large-scale development will make the EVA market continue to boom in recent years.


Among them, EVA film is the crucial material of photovoltaic modules, which will drive domestic demand for photovoltaic materials. This kind of film has excellent performance and is less affected by the technical route of photovoltaic cells. Moreover, the photovoltaic film is a vital packaging material for photovoltaic modules, and it only accounts for 5% of the cost of photovoltaic cell modules! The photovoltaic film is the inner packaging material of photovoltaic cell modules. It is used in the lamination process of cell module packaging. It covers the upper and lower sides of the cell and is bonded to the upper glass and the lower backplane (or glass) by vacuum lamination technology—form photovoltaic modules. The photovoltaic film is made of resin as the primary material by adding cross-linking agent and anti-aging auxiliary, then melts extrusion and drooling into the film. Photovoltaic film materials are not affected by the technical route, and EVA resin and POE resin will coexist for a long time in the future. The photovoltaic film can be divided into transparent EVA film, white EVA film, polyolefin (POE) film, multi-layer co-extruded POE film (EPE) and so on according to raw materials.


●Transparent EVA film is the most traditional product, suitable for all kinds of photovoltaic modules;

●White EVA film has better reflectivity and is mainly suitable for the lower packaging of photovoltaic modules;

●POE film has higher anti-PID performance (potential-induced attenuation: the refractive index of the passivation layer of the solar cell is reduced to improve the power generation efficiency, resulting in a significant drop in the actual power generation efficiency of the photovoltaic module), mainly suitable for double glass photovoltaic modules.



Multilayer Co-extrusion Film Is the General Trend


Since the theoretical efficiency of double-sided power generation modules is higher, which is the future development trend of photovoltaic modules, the permeability of white EVA and POE films will also increase accordingly, forming a trend of gradually replacing transparent EVA films. However, due to the poor adhesion of POE film, the use of multi-layer co-extruded EVA-POE-EVA structural film (EPE) can have both the excellent adhesion of EVA and the anti-PID performance POE.



The Middle East Is Developing Rapidly, and Arabs Continue to Enter the Game


The leading manufacturers with a global EVA production capacity of about 5.2 million tons include Exxon Mobil, Hankook and other companies that are rapidly accelerating their deployment in major industrial countries in the world, especially the economically powerful Exxon Mobil, which is popular in the world with the rampant character of the Americans. The layout of production capacity is strategically located - ExxonMobil Huizhou chemical complex construction project with a total investment of $10 billion was launched in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in 2019. The first phase of the project in 2023 is 1.2 million tons/year of crude oil to ethylene and downstream product production. The device is fully operational.


According to the forecast of the China Chemical Industry Network, in 2023, the Middle East will be the region with the fastest growth rate of EVA resin consumption in the world, and the average annual growth rate of EVA consumption will reach 8.3%. Northeast Asia will follow the Arab world, with an average annual growth rate 4.8%. The Middle East and Northeast Asia, where China, Japan and South Korea are located, will be higher than the global average annual growth rate of 4%. Demand for EVA from the United States and Western Europe grew more slowly. In the era of global photovoltaics ushering in a period of rapid development, the demand for photovoltaic films has also increased significantly, driving the demand for EVA photovoltaic materials.


With the continuous decline of investment costs and the improvement of power generation efficiency year by year, the China Photovoltaic Association predicts that in the next five years, the average annual new installed capacity of the global photovoltaic market will reach 287GW. It will reach a maximum of 391GW in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of 16%.


The output of photovoltaic modules is generally 1.15-1.2 times the installed capacity of photovoltaic cells. In 2019, the global installed capacity was 115GW, and the output of photovoltaic modules was 138GW.
